Classical Music is Dead*

Un-Temp Track This

Posted in we like by The Nouveau Classical Project on 04/19/2011

We really enjoyed this unexpected collaboration between Yo-Yo Ma and Lil Buck. Seeing a solo cello play alongside graceful Memphis Jookin was truly a beautiful sight. But we’ve definitely heard enough le Cygne for a lifetime (attribute that to us being classical geeks, or playing one too many weddings…), so we want to know: what music would you have playing for this video while the sound’s on ‘mute’?

This is a hard choice, but I have it narrowed down to two tracks. I’ve been on a huge hip hop kick lately, so that’s where I started and found the two tracks from Lupe Fiasco’s album Lasers. What I found is that the music has space to breath behind the beats and Lil Buck’s dance brought out the larger structure of the music.

In Letting Go, the dance stays with the opening piano line and lines up at some points with the beat, creating interesting accents in both music and dance. Letting Go is a little ethereal, so it fit with the opening section.

The other song is Beautiful Lasers (my favorite on the album). It has a similar ethereal quality, but brings out more intensity in the dance.

After going back and forth, I have to go with Letting Go, although I really wanted Beautiful Lasers to work better.

It’s interesting to see how hip hop and classical are coming together in this new generation of artists to the more obvious Kanye West using orchestral samples to subtle structures of Lupe Fiasco. Very cool stuff!!
